Jimmy Page admits source of "Rock and Roll": JP: When you've got the whole live creative process going on, that's how things like "Rock and Roll" come out. Q: And how exactly was that? JP: I think we were attempting "Four Sticks" and it wasn't happening and Bonzo started the drum intro to "Keep a Knocking" (by Little Richard/Mick Underwood Drum Intro) and I played the riff automatically, that was "Rock and Roll" and we got through the whole of the twelve bar bit (the first verse). We said 'this is great, forget "Four Sticks" let's work on this' and things were coming out like that. http://members.tripod.com/~trublukris/inter/jplz4.html Richie Blackmore: "Zeppelin, I liked their hard approach when they came out and did 'Whole Lotta Love.' I immediately tuned in with that type of style because before when we were fiddling around with orchestras, I thought 'something's wrong, I'm not giving all that I can't Thanks to them for the inspiration. They got it from Jeff Beck, who got it from the Small Faces..." Ritchie said he was motivated to try something like that in 1963. The results ("I just freaked out") can be found on the B-side of the Outlaws' version of "I Hear You Knockin'." Archaeologists and fans take note. From there, via "You Really Got Me" ("The solo was too bad to be Page. It had to be Dave Davies."), talk drifted to stealing. "Everybody steals. It's healthy to steal. The thing is to disguise who you're stealing from. I used to steal a lot from Jimi Hendrix." |

Subject: Dust My Broom
Here's one of these weird little paper trails that start with Steve
Marriott and end with.....er.....Steve Marriott
Most folks know that Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" lyrics and
vocals were stolen word for word from Steve Marriott's mouth, by a
Small Faces fanatic and front row devotee, Robert Plant
Anyone who hasn't heard it - check out the Small Faces version
of "You Need Lovin'" and prepare to be amazed
Now to be fair, Steve was covering a Muddy Waters song....but
realising that he couldn't do justice to Muddy's deep vocals - he
notched it up an octave and in doing so completely transformed the
song.
So the Led Zep classic actually bears little relation to the Muddy
Waters original, but it is a custom copy of the Small Faces version.
Ok - so Jimmy Page's guitar riff is special, and helps transform
Whole Lotta Love into a rock classic....or so I thought
Until I played the Birds version of Dust My Broom....and the guitar
riff is.........Page's Whole Lotta Love
The Birds were a great, but unsuccessful, British group who launched
Ronnie Wood. Art Wood may also have been a member....can't remember
Anyway - the song Dust My Broom is a blues classic - written
originally by Robert Johnson, and popularised by Elmore James
BUT.....when you listen to the Birds lyrics, against this Whole
Lotta Love guitar riff....they are the same as Ian MacLagan's
Growing Closer....which of course appeared on As Safe as yesterday !
Strange
